Career Opportunities Outside of Academia

Date: 7th of July, 2022

Venue: Osnabrück University, Seminarstraße 20, Building 15, Room 322a

Organization: Prof. Albert Newen, Prof. Achim Stephan, & Dr. Gregor Hörzer

During this equality and career guidance workshop we will focus on an intriguing question: What are possible career opportunities after completing the PhD? Students spent many years on their big study project and can go as deep as they like into specific research topics. After the dissertation, it becomes relevant to ask how all this acquired knowledge and related skills can be put into practice best. We would like to address this decisive moment by looking at several possible career paths there are for young doctorates.

For this reason, we invited three former PhD students who finished their studies either in Bochum or in Osnabrück. They will give talks about their exciting career paths, the lessons they learned and important insights they want to share with early career students. Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A session where listeners can ask informal questions and discuss the pros and cons of different career decisions. In the end, we will have a general discussion session in smaller groups spread over several tables.

Safety Standards

The ongoing pandemic continues to prompt the use of appropriate safety measures during face-to-face events. We want to ensure both comfort and safety for all participants. Therefore, the following rigorous safety measures apply:

  • All participants must conform to the 2G standard. This means that participants typically have to be fully vaccinated. This is satisfied by two up-to-date vaccinations. Any additional vaccination is highly welcomed, but not mandatory. Please carry some form of proof for this.
  • All participants need to be tested for that day. This can be done via official tests around the city (verified by an official certificate), or via our own tests on-site in front of the building. A third vaccination does not substitute the obligation to be tested!
  • FFP2-masks are obligatory, especially when moving around, during close discussions, and at the catering tables. The mask must also be worn at the seat, but the speakers can take their masks off during their talk.

You can, of course, personally decide to take precautions above this standard. We also reserve the right to adjust these measures based on the dynamics of the pandemic situation.
